Malta Digital Nomad Application Process

Malta Digital Nomad Application Process

Ready to become a digital nomad in Malta? The process involves careful preparation and follows Malta’s unique two-phase system. Unlike many countries, Malta operates through the Residency Malta Agency with a structured online application process that requires attention to detail.

Phase 1:

Initial Application Submission

  • Gather Your Documents – Ensure you have a valid passport, CV, employment contracts, financial statements, and a criminal record certificate
  • Complete Online Application – Submit your application through the official Residency Malta Agency portal
  • Document Upload – Attach electronic copies of all required documents in the specified formats
  • Initial Review – The agency verifies document completeness and sends an invoice if everything is in order

Phase 2:

Fee Payment and Processing

  • Pay the Application Fee – Transfer €300 via bank transfer to the Residency Malta Agency (non-refundable)
  • Background Checks – Malta conducts thorough background verification and document authentication
  • Wait for Approval – Initial processing takes up to 30 working days
  • Submit Post-Approval Documents – Within 30 days of approval, provide accommodation proof and health insurance

Phase 3:

Final Approval and Card Issuance

  • Receive Final Approval – Complete processing of your residence permit application
  • Travel to Malta – Enter Malta with your approval letter and passport
  • Collect Residence Card – Pay an additional €27.50 card issuance fee in person at Residency Malta offices (card payment only, cash not accepted)

Top Tip:

Submit your application at least 4-6 months before your planned relocation date to account for processing times and potential document requests. The €300 application fee is non-refundable; therefore, ensure that all documents are complete and accurate before submission. Consider applying during off-peak periods (avoid summer months) when processing may be faster due to lower application volumes.
